Comparison on Hydraulic Characteristics of Vertical and Horizontal Air-Cushion Surge Chambers in the Hydropower Station under Load Disturbances

Hydroelectric energy is an increasingly vital and effective renewable for modern society. The protective effect on the water hammer in pipeline, operational stability of hydropower system, flow regime air-cushion surge chamber (ACSC) are three main problems during design station with ACSC. Comprehensively comparing above issues between horizontal vertical ACSCs meaningful. This study established one-dimensional (1D) model based Method Characteristics (MOC) under large load disturbances (LLD) rigid column theory small (SLD). At same time, three-dimensional (3D) was built Volume Fluid (VOF) to obtain a more detailed ACSC acceptance condition. results showed that superior one its safe depth, smaller maximum air pressure, stable LLD. In contrast, better than extensive area calm SLD transient process fluctuation SLD. will provide reference future project selecting structure
